LEWISTON, Maine -- Despite yielding seven fourth-quarter goals, #16 Amherst College managed to hold off host-Bates College, 16-13, Saturday in NESCAC women's lacrosse action.
The Bobcats celebrated Senior Day prior to the opening draw, as the garnet and white honored Class of 2024 members
Emma Austin,
Isla Cotter,
Madeleine Donovan,
Hanna Matthews,
Sadie O'Neil, and
Maddy Roelofs.
After coming out of the initial period with a 5-3 lead, the Mammoths (6-5, 3-4 NESCAC) owned the second quarter by out-scoring the Bobcats, 5-0, and presumably coasting into intermission with a comfy 10-3 cushion. Taking the third session, 4-3, Amherst carried an eight-goal surplus (14-6) into the final stanza.
Clara Sosa (9:41) and Bridget Finley (8:08) netted their fifth and eighth goals of the game, respectively, to go ahead, 16-7, in the fourth. The Bobcats (kicked off by a
Laci Raveis tally with 7:37 remaining in regulation) proceeded to unleash a 6-0 flurry that expired with Matthews' career-high fifth goal of the game with 22 seconds left.
Ironically, Bates out-shot the Mammoths, 39-27 (26-22 on frame) and owned a 19-14 draw control advantage in the setback.
Lauren Wong provided her fourth hat trick of the season for the Bobcats. Austin and
Caroline Taggart each accounted for two goals apiece. Roelofs paced the home team with seven draw controls and four ground balls.
Jessye Salmon gathered a game-high 11 saves in 52:23 to earn the goalkeeping victory for Amherst.
Avery Lehman (22:56, 9 GA, 3 saves) suffered the loss in the start for Bates.
The Bobcats (5-7, 1-6 NESCAC) will now remain idle until next Sunday, April 21 (Alumni Day) when the garnet and white hosts #7 Wesleyan University. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
