GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Bates women's swimming senior captain Grace Wenger placed sixth in the country Thursday in the 200-yard freestyle, highlighting the second day of the NCAA Championships for the Bobcats. 

Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) raced to the finish in the morning prelim in 1:50.54, qualifying for the championship final. Then she clocked in at 1:50.59 in the evening, which was good for sixth place and All-America honors. It matches her best finish ever at NCAAs, as Wenger also took sixth in the 200 free in 2022. 

The women's swimming team surged from 26th place to 19th place in the team standings with two days remaining. The 400-yard medley relay team of junior Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.), first-year Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine), first-year Emily Kalvaitis (Darien, Conn.), and Wenger recorded a prelims time of 3:48.24. They followed that up with a mark of 3:48.29 in the consolation final, good for 13th in the country and All-America honors. 

The men's 400-yard medley relay team of first-year Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), sophomore Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), first-year John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa), and sophomore Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) also earned All-America honors, racing to the finish in 3:18.36 in the morning prelims and finishing 15th in the country with their time of 3:18.84 in the consolation final. It's the first All-America awards for Johnson and Weigel, while Somridhivej picked up his second career All-America honor and Cory his fifth.

Weigel also made some history in the morning prelims in the 200-yard freestyle, breaking his own school record with a time of 1:39.37, good for 26th in the country.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday morning, with prelims set for 10am and finals at 6pm.
