CLERMONT, Fla. -- Bates College blasted three home runs, including the first collegiate clouts for
Isabel Bettencourt and
Zariya Anderson, while
Isabella Albro and
Delaney Rankin spun a pair of complete-game gems, as the Bobcats bested both St. Lawrence University and Washington & Jefferson College Monday on day two of the PFX Spring Games.
GAME ONE
Long balls off the bats of the Bates newcomers brought around all three runs for the garnet and white, while Albro secured her first career victory, as the Bobcats locked down a 3-2, comeback victory vs. St. Lawrence.
The Saints took an initial 1-0 lead as a two-out infield single from CF Caelen Jahnle brought in P Sofia Berryhill (single) from third base. The Bobcats responded immediately as Anderson (2-for-3) launched a majestic blast over the left-field fence with one out in the bottom half of the frame to tie the score at 1-1.
Another run-inducing infield single, this time by SS Vivian Johnson, brought home an unearned run to put St. Lawrence back on top. Moving to the home half of the sixth, Saints pitching induced a pair of infield pop-outs to start the stanza. DP
Kennedy Jones kept the inning alive with a scalding single to left. With pinch-runner
Sophie Garber now on first base, the stage was now set for Bettencourt, who crunched what would stand as the game-winner over the wall in left-center.
Albro (1-1), who went eight frames in a walk-off loss to Nazareth University the day before, again went the distance in earning the New York City native her first win while sporting a Bates College uniform (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) in a game that lasted just 1:10.
Berryhill (0-2) took the defeat for the 1-3 Saints (5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 K).
GAME TWO
Lone runs in the first, second, fifth, and sixth innings, along with a phenomenal pitching performance by Rankin, provided a very close-to-perfect 4-0 win over Washington & Jefferson.
Jones joined the dinger dance in the first frame of the game as the 2023 team leader in the category connected for her first of the year to put the Bobcats ahead, 1-0. A run-scoring fielder's choice in the second, followed by a costly run-inducing fielding miscue in the fifth, pushed Bates' lead to 3-0.
Not finished yet, Jones added another insurance tally as the native of Ocean Springs, Miss. ripped a ribbie single to left, bringing around CF
Maya Lee (2-for-3) from second base after the first-year roped a single to center and advanced on a passed ball.
Rankin (1-1) scattered three hits and a pair of walks (4 K) over seven full to secure the sophomore her second-career shutout victory. Kaylee Witner (1-2) suffered the loss for the Presidents, which have lost five in a row (1-5).
The Bobcats (2-2) get an early start on Tuesday with games vs. Elmhurst University (9:00 a.m.) and The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1:30 p.m.).
