CLERMONT, Fla. -- Bates College softball, taking the diamond for day three of the PFX Spring Games, suffered a pair of losses Tuesday as the Bobcats dropped decisions to Elmhurst University (Ill.) and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
GAME ONE
Elmhurst, with four runs in both the first and sixth innings, along with a two-spot in the fourth, earned a 10-2, mercy rule victory over Bates in the first contest of the day for both squads.Â
Rapping 10 overall hits in the victory, four different players recorded multi-hit performances for the Blue Jays (2-3). DP Maddie Kriech went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI at the dish.Â
Chiara O'Leary was a force on both sides of the action. The junior not only went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, but also went the distance in the circle (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 K) to move to 1-1 on the young season.
DP
Kennedy Jones continues her scorching start with the bat (.444 BA) for the Bobcats as the sophomore slugger accounted for two of Bates' four knocks.
Isabella Albro (1-2) suffered the loss for the garnet and white.
Ella Maher, making her collegiate pitching debut, hurled the final 4.1 innings in relief.
GAME TWO
Three runs in the first inning, and another four tallies in the third, provided Wisconsin-Stevens Point plenty of cushion as the Pointers went on to defeat the Bobcats, 9-2, in the nightcap.
UWSP (11-2), winners of four-straight, unloaded for 15 hits in the game. 10 different Pointers provided at least one knock, with five players having two apiece. RF Sara Traxel (2-4, 3B), 1B Rachel Baker (2-for-3, 2 R, 2B), and DP Allie Meyers (2-for-4) each collected a pair of RBI in the victory.
Elli Matzke (5.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 3 K) improved to 5-1 in the circle for UWSP.Â
Delaney Rankin (1-2) gutted out a complete-game effort for Bates while going 2-for-3 with two ribbies at the plate.
The Bobcats (2-4) take a much-needed day off Wednesday before returning to action Thursday with Sunshine State showdowns vs. Smith College (1:45 p.m.) and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (4:15 p.m.).
