Eleven pool records fall in entertaining men's swimming and diving CBB Meet

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Marrich Somridhivej broke the Bates record in the 100-yard breaststroke and 11 Tarbell Pool records fell Saturday at an entertaining men's CBB Meet. 

The Colby College Mules narrowly prevailed over second-place Bates, outscoring the hosts by a count of 150-146. The Bobcats outscored third-place Bowdoin 176-108. 

Meet Highlights
  • Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.) won the 100-yard breaststroke in an NCAA "B" cut time of 55.08 seconds, breaking the previous school record of 55.47 seconds, set by Nate Sommer '23 at last year's NESCAC Championships. It's also a new Tarbell Pool record. Fellow sophomore Kailer Tom (San Francisco, Calif.) was the runner-up in a personal-record 56.75 seconds, the sixth fastest time in Bates history.
  • Sophomore Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) set pool records in both the 50-yard freestyle, where he won in an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.13 seconds, and in the 100-yard freestyle, where Cory prevailed in an NCAA "B" cut time of 44.23 seconds. Both times are the second-fastest in Bates history.
  • Senior captain Mark Gregory (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a pool-record time of 9:38.39. He also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.70. 
  • First-year Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), Somridhivej, Cory, and sophomore Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine) won the 200-yard medley relay in a pool-record time of 1:30.34.
  • The 200-yard freestyle relay team of first-year John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa), Pierce, Somridhivej, and Cory won their race in a pool-record time of 1:21.83.
  • Weigel won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.80, the sixth-fastest time in Bates history.
  • Johnson was second in the 100-yard backstroke, racing to the finish in 50.41 seconds, the third-fastest time in Bates history. He also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:49.67 and the 200-IM in 1:55.30.
The Bates men's swimming and diving team is back in action Feb. 22-25 at the NESCAC Championships, hosted by Colby College.
