MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates swimming and diving teams took on Tufts in a dual meet Friday evening, winning six events and turning in some impressive performances along the way.
Tufts, which entered the meet with both its men's team (ranked 13th nationally) and it's women's team (ranked eighth nationally) in the top 25 polls, swept the Bobcats in the meet. The No. 22 nationally ranked Bates women's team scored 84 points while the Jumbos tallied 198. On the men's side, Bates tallied 91 points while Tufts finished with 205.
Bates Men's Highlights
- Sophomore Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.) won the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.43 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.40 seconds.
- First-year John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) won the 200-yard IM in 1:56.90 and took second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.72.
- Sophomore Trent Hieber (Granby, Conn.) took second in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.44 seconds.
- First-year Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.) placed third in the 50-yard backstroke in 24.24 seconds and third in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.46 seconds.
- Sophomore Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) took third in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.38 seconds and tied for third in the 50-yard butterfly in 23.49 seconds.
- First-year Noah Katz (Hallowell, Maine) tied for third in the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.98 seconds.
Bates Women's Highlights
- Senior captain Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.48 and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.82 seconds.
- First-year Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) won the 50-yard breaststroke in 30.62 seconds and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.25.
- Senior Natalie Young (Windham, N.H.) won the 200-yard IM in 2:11.81.
- Junior Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.70 seconds.
The Bobcats are scheduled to host the University of New England next Friday at 6pm at Tarbell Pool.
