MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates swimming and diving teams competed Sunday at Middlebury in a dual meet, with the Bates men emerging victorious and the women falling just short against the Panthers.
The men's team tallied 165 points to Middlebury's 132, while the women impressed by winning nine events and earning 141 points, only five points behind the Panthers, who finished with 146.
Bates Men's Highlights
- The 200-yard medley relay team of first-year Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), sophomore Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.), and sophomore Nate Pierce (Fairfield, Maine) won their race in 1:32.48.
- First-year John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.60 and the 100-yard butterfly in 51.97 seconds.
- Johnson won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.41 seconds and took home first place in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:52.68.
- Somridhivej led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.79 seconds. Sophomore Kailer Tom (San Francisco, Calif.) finished runner-up in 58.05 seconds.
- First-year Liam Friedlander (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.32.
- First-year Collin Faraher (Madison, N.J.) led a 1-2-3 Bates finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.81 seconds.
- Cory won the 100-yard freestyle in 45.66 seconds.
- Cory, Pierce, Faraher, and Weigel won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:24.22.
Bates Women's Highlights
- The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Sophie Cassily (Rye, N.H.), first-year Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine), first-year Emily Kalvaitis (Darien, Conn.), and senior Margie McLeod (Durham, Maine) won their race in 1:47.92.
- Senior captain Grace Wenger (Hanover, N.H.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.97 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.16. She also led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.33 seconds. Sophomore Lianna Rosman (Bethesda, Md.) finished runner-up in the 50 free in 25.48 seconds.
- Cassily won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.05 seconds.
- Palmer won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.73.
- Kalvaitis led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.71 seconds. Sophomore Emma Burke (Whitesboro, N.Y.) finished runner-up in 1:00.32.
- Senior Natalie Young (Windham, N.H.) won the 400-yard IM in 4:38.31.
- McLeod, Kalvaitis, junior Stephanie Tropper (Solon, Ohio), and Wenger won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.28.
The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, Jan. 26 at 5:30pm when they visit Tufts for another dual meet with a NESCAC foe.
