LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's tennis tandem of
Ally Friedman and
Iris Westmoreland ran the gamut this weekend as the duo finished as the last pair standing with a victory in the Wallach Invitational doubles finals (hosted by the Bobcats).
Friedman, team captain for the garnet and white, nearly completed the tournament sweep as the senior also advanced to the title match in singles competition, eventually dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Sam Riordan of Colby College in the finals.
It was quite the trek for Friedman and her first-year partner as they opened Saturday action with a first-round bye, followed by an 8-6 defeat of Trinity College's Allie Francis and Naisha Rathi in the quarterfinals. Fellow Bobcats,
Ava Lyon and
Isabella Saul, secured an opening round defeat of Trinity's Elise Brennan and Johanna Woitschaetzke (8-1) and proceeded to push past Colby's Sydney Landau and Michaela Landry, 8-7 (5), to set up an intrasquad semifinal for Bates (on paper, anyway).
Friedman and Westmoreland advanced via walkover, setting the stage for the pair's title run. Facing off vs. Colby's Riordan and Ellie Gershaw, it would be the host team taking the trophy with an 8-3 triumph over the duo from the Bobcats' in-state rival.
In singles play, Friedman earned an opening round bye, before authoring a 6-3, 6-3 victory over first-year teammate,
Elise Hepburn, in the round of 16. Moving on to the quarterfinals, the native of East Hampton, N.Y. dropped Colby's Amelie Gal (6-3, 6-4), followed by a 6-4, 6-3 upending of the aforementioned Landau to climb to the championship round.
Ava Steinberger, seeing her first collegiate action for the Bobcats, enjoyed a successful showing as the first-year advanced to the quarterfinals with victories over Trinity's Phebe Fisher, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, and Angelina Shyltsyna, 6-4, 7-5.
Julia Anderson (6-2, 6-2),
Drew Williams (6-3, 6-3),
Grace LaFountain (6-2, 6-3), and Saul (6-2, 6-3) also enjoyed first-round success for the garnet and white.
The Bobcats will conclude its fall slate with an appearance in the ITA New England Championship (hosted by Wesleyan University), Sept. 22-24.
