BANGOR, Maine -- Coming off Saturday's late-minute 2-1 setback at home vs. Emerson College, Bates College found the perfect elixir for its lingering sour stomach ... goals! And lots of them, as the Bobcats netted six on Sunday en route to a satisfying 6-0 handling of Husson University in non-conference women's soccer action.
The onslaught was the Bobcats' largest offensive output since a 6-1 victory at Thomas College (9/27/17) and the program's biggest shutout margin since blanking the University of Southern Maine, 8-0, nearly seven years ago to the day (9/11/16).
Bates and Husson looked to be headed to a scoreless first half before sophomore
Gabby Hill-Junke found the back of the net for the first time this season with a tally just 52 seconds (44:08) before the break.
The scoring came fast and furious for the garnet and white out of intermission, starting with a pair from
Izzy Lussier as the senior collected her first collegiate brace with goals just 2:22 apart at 49:54 and 52:16.
With the lead now 3-0 Bobcats, sophomore
Olivia Faucera connected for her first-career goal at 61:36. Junior
Abby Alter and first-year
Olivia Becker (first of career) closed out the rout with scoring efforts at 70:32 and 85:41, respectively. Senior captain
Rachel Lowell was credited with a pair of assists in the effort.
The Bobcats owned the shot column with a 30-4 margin, including an 11-1 advantage on frame.
Bates' goalkeeping trio of
Ruby Reimann (70:32),
Samantha Bunar (10:31), and
Sydney Litney (8:57) combined for the Bobcats' second shutout over the team's first three games of the season.
Now 1-1-1 on the year, the garnet and white returns to action Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. when the Bobcats welcome #6 Williams to Garcelon Field for a NESCAC clash.
