LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates women's soccer hosted NESCAC-rival Williams Sunday on historic Garcelon Field in a game that resulted in a 2-0 win for the #22 Ephs.
Williams (4-0-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) opened the scoring just 4:16 into the match when a shot from junior Parker Harnett (Yarmouth, Maine) deflected off the left post of the Bobcats' net and rolled to the feet of junior Blakeley Buckingham (Jr.-Houston, Texas), who rifled the ball home for her first goal of the year.
Midway through the first half, junior
Abby Alter had an opportunity to equalize for the Bobcats (21:19), but her shot was saved at the near post by Ephs goalkeeper, Margaret Huelin (So.-Farmington, Conn.). Minutes later (25:24), sophomore
Gabby Hill-Junke launched a shot off of a free kick that sailed just over the crossbar.
In the 43rd minute (42:12), Williams doubled their lead when sophomore Ansley Burns (So.-Scottsdale, Ariz.) split the Bates defense with a through ball to find Bria Abbiati (Newton, Mass.) at the top of the box, who subsequently slotted the ball past junior netminder, Ruby Reimann, for the first-year's second tally on the season.
Despite the outcome, both squads got off 13 shots apiece with the Ephs owning a slim 4-3 surplus on frame.
Bates is back in action on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Biddeford, Maine to take on the University of New England in a non-conference tilt.
