BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The host No. 14 nationally ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored 10 of the first 11 goals of the contest, defeating the Bates men's lacrosse team 22-9 Wednesday night in NESCAC action.
Patrick Fitzgerald led the Polar Bears (7-3, 3-3 NESCAC) with eight goals on the evening while sophomore
Wil Masterson (York, Maine) paced the Bobcats (1-8, 0-6 NESCAC) with four goals. Masterson also dished out an assist, recorded two ground balls, and caused a turnover. Will Byrne added five goals and a game-high three assists for Bowdoin and junior
Jake Johnson (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) chipped in a goal and two assists for Bates.
The Polar Bears scored the first three goals of the contest before Masterson got the Bobcats on the board with 7:19 left in the first quarter, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
But Bowdoin went on a 7-0 run, opening up a 10-1 advantage on a Byrne goal with 14:11 left in the second quarter. Masterson responded with two quick goals and first-year
Connor Hartman (Hingham, Mass.) completed the 3-0 run for Bates with an assist from Johnson, making the score 10-4 with 9:17 to go until halftime.
That's as close Bates got the rest of the way, with Bowdoin going on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Bowdoin out-shot Bates 46-34 on the evening and dominated the face-off category, winning 23 of 32 in the contest. The Polar Bears recorded 36 ground balls to 20 for Bates.
The Bobcats host Hamilton this Saturday at 1pm for Senior Day at Garcelon Field.
