LEWISTON, Maine (Lafayette Street Field)-- On a day Bates College softball celebrated its senior class, it would be a pair of first-year Bobcats that would lead the garnet and white to victory as the home team upended #8 Tufts for a key NESCAC win vs. the first-place Jumbos.
GAME ONE (Bobcats 1, Tufts 0)
A solo homer by first-year catcher,
Kennedy Jones, with one out in the fourth inning turned out to be all the Bobcats would need as
Madison Hollis breezed through Tufts' batting order (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 5 K) for the first-year hurler's second shutout of the season. With the 1-0 win, Bates has now defeated its conference foe for only the second time since 2007.
Tufts (31-3) entered the contest with an eight-game winning streak and an unblemished NESCAC record of 12-0.
Sophia DiCocco, except for the solo long ball, was just as brilliant in the circle for Tufts. The junior Jumbo scattered four hits (1 BB), while striking out three in the six-inning effort. Jones' home run was the only fly ball of the game for Bates as all 18 of the Bobcats' outs were on the ground or via the K.
DiCocco dropped to 11-2 on the year with the setback.
GAME TWO (Tufts 7, Bobcats 0)
A pair of runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth frames provided the Jumbos plenty of cushion as Tufts salvaged a doubleheader split with the 7-0 win in the nightcap.
SS Josie Steinberg (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and 3B Rachel Moore (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) drove in four of Tufts' tallies as four Jumbos enjoyed multi-hit performances in the win.
Sky Johnson (9-0) remained perfect in the circle for Tufts as the sophomore fired a gem consisting of just four hits (0 BB) and eight strikeouts over seven frames.
Hollis (6-5), also starting game two for the Bobcats, suffered the loss (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K) in her bid for a second win on the day.
Delaney Rankin compiled 4.1 innings of relief (9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, BB).
The Bobcats celebrated the collegiate careers of seniors
Kama Boswell,
Katherine Merisotis,
Cassidy Musco, and
Amanda Taylor prior to Saturday's action.
Musco made the most of the honor as she ripped a pair of hits in each of the day's contests.
Bates (14-12, 6-8 NESCAC) will take to the road Sunday for a non-conference twin-bill at Husson University 12:00 p.m. (weather-permitting).
