BANGOR, Maine -- Bates College and Husson University were able to dodge the elements for just so long Sunday as the two squads, after playing game one to completion, had the nightcap of its non-conference softball twin-bill halted after seven full frames, ending the contest in a 5-5 stalemate.
GAME ONE (Husson 8, Bobcats 0) (6 inn.)
Leading by a 3-0 score after five innings of action, Husson exploded for five runs on five hits and a Bates miscue in the bottom of the sixth to abruptly send off the Bobcats, 8-0, in Sunday's opener.
McKenna Smith limited the garnet and white to just two hits (6.0 IP, 1 BB, 5 K) en route to the senior's 17th victory (17-5) of the season.Â
GAME TWO (Bobcats 5, Husson 5)
The Eagles (27-12-1) picked up right where they left off by plating three runs in the home half of the first for an initial 3-0 lead. Bates, which had not scored since
Kennedy Jones' game-winning homer in the fourth inning of Saturday's 1-0 home win over #8 Tufts, brought in a pair in the top of the third, ending its scoreless streak at 17-straight frames.
With Husson holding a 4-2 advantage after six full, the Bobcats, thanks to a two-run, game-tying single by Hollis, followed by a one-out ribbie from Jones,went up by one heading into the last of the seventh.
LF Teagan Blackie opened the home frame with a double to left-center. With one out in the inning, 2B Lydia Rice proceeded to connect on a two-bagger of her own to left-center, bringing in Blackie to salvage the rain-induced tie.
Jones enjoyed a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate for Bates with a pair of RBI. Hollis went 2-for-4 with her two ribbies and two runs scored.
Delaney Rankin went the distance in the circle for the Bobcats (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), flinging 125 pitches.
Bates (14-13-1) now remains idle until Saturday as the garnet and white visits Trinity College (Hartford, Conn.) for a NESCAC double-dip. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
