A Tale of Two Halves for Women's Soccer as Bobcats Secure Late-Minute Win in 2-1 Thriller Over UNE

Charlotte Jones Connects on Masumoto Corner Kick for Game-Winner in 88th Minute

Story Links

Lewiston, Maine (Garcelon Field) - A Charlotte Jones (Jr.-San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) header off a perfectly-placed corner kick from Anna Masumoto (So.-Seattle, Wash.), with just 2:47 remaining in regulation, completed an incredible comeback by Bates College Tuesday evening as the Bobcats escaped with a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer triumph over the University of New England.

The evening started somewhat inauspiciously for the garnet and white as UNE's Bella Reil (Jr.-Berwick, Maine) swiped an ill-advised pass by the Bates' defense and promptly deposited her second goal of the season (18 yards out) just 3:07 into the contest.

The Nor'easters would hold onto the 1-0 surplus all the way until the 69th minute (68:56) when Elizabeth Patrick (Sr.-Ipswich, Mass.) crunched her first tally of the year on a blast from 20+ yards.

With the score knotted at 1-1, the stage was set for the night's magic moment when Jones used every bit of her 5-11 frame to connect on the game-winner, sending the Bates bench into a frenzy.

The victors dominated the stat sheet in the victory, outshooting UNE (4-3) by an 18-9 margin, including an inflated 12-1 advantage on frame. Ruby Reimann (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) collected her first win of the season in net for the Bobcats as the sophomore played the entire second half. Samantha Bunar (Fy.-Lynnfield, Mass.) covered the first stanza for Bates with neither keeper making a save in the game.

UNE's Ariel Martin (Fy.-Denver, Colo.) shined despite the outcome with a mighty 10 saves in the effort.

Bates, now 3-2 on the year, returns to the pitch Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when the Bobcats host #4 Amherst College (4-1, 1-1 NESCAC) in conference competition. The match will take place at Russell Track & Field.
