WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates men's track and field team finished in fourth place out of 31 schools at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships, hosted Friday and Saturday by Williams College.
The Bobcats scored 67 points as a team, ahead of host Williams (62 points) and just 3.5 points back of third-place Springfield. Bates scored the second most points among the 10 NESCAC schools competing in the meet.

Jackson Elkins (South Deerfield, Mass.), first-year
Calvin Capelle (Laguna Beach, Calif.), first-year
Cam Stathos (Wellesley, Mass.), and first-year
Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) turned in a terrific performance in the 4x800 relay, finishing in second place out of 14 teams with a time of 7:53.99, nearly overtaking MIT's relay team (7:53.58) for the title.
A day after winning the New England title in the hammer throw, junior
Liam Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished runner-up in the discus (153-6/46.80m) and the javelin (189-5/57.74m) on Saturday. He also placed eighth in the shot put with a top throw of 47-2.5 (14.39m).Â
Byrne's performance in the javelin moved him up to fifth on the Bates all-time performance list in the event.

- A day after finishing third in the 10,000 meters, junior Ryan Smith (Westport, Conn.) scored more points for the Bobcats by taking fifth in the 5000 meters in 14:55.15. Meanwhile, sophomore Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) finished seventh in the same event in 14:59.30.Â
- Senior Garrett Evans (Sauquoit, N.Y.), first-year Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), first-year Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.), and junior Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) placed sixth in the 4x100 relay in 43.31 seconds.Â
- Evans, junior Robert Griffin (Norwell, Mass.), junior Owen Glover (Andover, Mass.), and Williams finished eighth in the 4x400 relay in 3:25.81.
Bates is back in action at the Open New England Championships next Friday and Saturday in Smithfield, R.I.
