Men's Track and Field rolls to victory at Bates Quad Meet

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Liam Byrne set three personal records and won four events to pace the Bates men's track and field team to a dominating victory in the Bates Quad Meet Saturday in the first outdoor meet of the season for the Bobcats.

Bates scored 98 points as a team to win the meet, bettering second-place Bowdoin by nearly 40 points.

Byrne (Ridgefield, Conn.), a three-time All-NESCAC honoree in the throws, picked up where he left off in 2021, when he was the top javelin thrower in the conference. He tossed the javelin a career-best 172-9 on Saturday, bettering his previous record of 165-8. Byrne led a 1-2 finish in the hammer with a career-best throw of 172-6. Senior John Everett (Winchester, Mass.) also recorded a personal best in the hammer, taking second with a top throw of 150-2.

Byrne won the discus with a career-best throw of 155-7 and he, Everett, and senior Chidubem Umeh (Randolph, Mass.) finished 1-2-3 in the shot put at 47-9, 46-0.5, and a career-best 42-5.25 respectively.

Umeh had a big day, winning the high jump with a career-best leap of 6-2.75.

Junior Colby Stakun-Pickering (Wellesley, Mass.) won two individual events and helped the Bobcats win a relay as well.

The 4x100 relay got the track events off on a strong foot for the Bobcats, with first-year Kevin O'Connor (Milford, Mass.), Stakun-Pickering, first-year Truman Williams (Montclair, N.J.), and senior Garrett Evans (Sauquoit, N.Y.) winning in 43.09 seconds.

Stakun-Pickering led a 1-2 Bates finish in the 100 meters with a wind aided time of 11.05 seconds. O'Connor took second in 11.21 seconds. Stakun-Pickering also took home the top spot in the 200 meters with a wind aided time of 22.48 seconds.

First-year Aidan Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) won the 800 meters in 2:00.07 and sophomore Ned Farrington (Cohasset, Mass.) won his first collegiate 5K in 15:02.50.

The Bobcats had a monopoly in the 400 meter hurdles and junior Evan Koch (Brattleboro, Vt.) emerged victorious out of four competitors with his time of 59.65 seconds.

Bates men's track and field is back in action next Saturday when the Bobcats visit Tufts to take on the Jumbos and RPI.
