Men's lacrosse defeats Connecticut College 15-13 on Senior Day

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior captains Jackson Sell and Jack Lousararian combined for nine points and the Bates men's lacrosse team defeated Connecticut College 15-13 Saturday on Senior Day at Garcelon Field.

Sell (Mill Valley, Calif.) and junior Malcolm Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) paced the Bobcats with three goals apiece, while Lousararian (Mansfield, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals and dished out a career-high four assists in the victory. With the score tied at 13, Klingbeil scored the game-winning goal, unassisted with 3:47 remaining in regulation.

The Bobcats (1-11, 1-8 NESCAC) never trailed the Camels (4-6, 3-5 NESCAC) in the contest. Klingbeil and Conn. College's Patrick Atkins traded goals to start the game before senior long pole John Farrell (Bernardsville, N.J.) started a 4-0 Bates run with 10:04 left in the first quarter. Lousararian scored two goals during the run and Sell scored one.

The Camels answered with three of the next four goals and Bates led 6-4 at the end of one.

Seniors Max Kim (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Robert Purcifull (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored the first two goals of the second quarter before the Camels came roaring back, ending the quarter on a 3-0 run and cutting the Bates lead to 8-7 at halftime.

Bates scored four of the first five goals in the third quarter, going up 12-8 on an unassisted tally from Sell with 9:03 remaining.

They couldn't shake the Camels though, as the visitors battled back repeatedly in the contest. A Jared Rainville man-up goal on an assist from Jack Tenzer cut the Bates lead to 12-10 with 4:38 remaining in the third. Sell and JJ Ford traded goals in the latter part of the quarter and Bates took a 13-11 lead into the fourth.

Ford played the role of distributor to help the Camels tie the game. He assisted on tallies from Patrick Linehan and Nick Farnham, evening the score at 13 with 7:27 left in the game. Neither team scored again until Klingbeil found the back of the net. Then with less than a minute remaining, sophomore Wil Masterson (York, Maine) put the game out of reach with an insurance tally.

Senior Kyung Phil Ko (Toronto, Ontario) got the start for the Bobcats in goal, making two saves in four chances while playing the first 10:28 of the contest. Sophomore Spencer Wood (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) entered the game and turned in a strong performance, saving 14 of 25 shots to earn the win. In addition to his goal, Farrell had a big day on defense, causing three turnovers and recording a pair of ground balls.

Before the game, the Bobcats honored 13 seniors: Oliver Allen (Portsmouth, N.H.), Walter Braun (Charlotte, Vt.), Farrell, Kim, Ko, Lousararian, Christian Olivieri (Hull, Mass.), Liam Orifici (Kensington, N.H.), Purcifull, captain Pierson Rambusch (Madison, N.J.), Sell, Griffin Smith (West Hartford, Conn.), and captain Dylan Williams (Sharon, Mass.).

Bates is back in action on Wednesday, April 27 when the Bobcats visit Colby for a game that gets underway at 4:30pm.
