OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Bates men's lacrosse team took an early lead against No. 17 nationally ranked Amherst but a big mid-game run propelled the Mammoths past the Bobcats by a final score of 22-10 Friday afternoon at the Mustang Classic.
The Bobcats (0-5, 0-3 NESCAC) took a 6-5 lead with 9:58 left in the second quarter when sophomore
Wil Masterson (York, Maine) found junior
Malcolm Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) for the latter's second goal of the game. Klingbeil, Masterson, and senior
Robert Purcifull (Newport Beach, Calif.) paced Bates with two goals each.
The Mammoths (2-1, 2-1 NESCAC) proceeded to go on a 12-0 run to take control of the game. Tanyr Krummenacher tied the contest on an assist from PJ Clementi with 9:19 left in the second quarter and Brock Gonzalez gave Amherst the lead for good with 8:07 remaining. Krummenacher, Gonzalez, and Bayard Demallie scored three goals each for Amherst.
Amherst out-shot the Bobcats, 56-38, while having an 43-32 advantage in ground balls and won 19 of 34 face-offs. The Bobcats turned the ball over 23 times, 13 of which were caused by Amherst.
Sophomore
Lowell Hairston (Reistertown, Md.) played well in his return to his home state. He scored a goal, recorded a team-high four ground balls and caused a turnover. Senior captain
Jackson Sell (Mill Valley, Calif.) dished out two assists and recorded a pair of ground balls.
The Bobcats wrap up the Mustang Classic Saturday afternoon when they take on No. 5 nationally ranked York at 3:40pm.
