OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Bates men's lacrosse team hung with No. 5 nationally ranked York for three quarters, eventually falling 19-8 Saturday afternoon at the Mustang Classic.
The Spartans (4-2) racked up a 5-0 advantage through the first 15 minutes of play, while going 3-for-3 on extra-man opportunities during that span. Dylan Wolf had a pair of goals on the extra-man unit, while Will Harnick tallied three points in the quarter with a goal and two assists.
Bates gained some ground in the second quarter as the Bobcats (0-6) scored three times and cut the deficit to three (7-3) heading into halftime. Sophomore
Wil Masterson (York, Maine ) got Bates on the board with an unassisted tally and senior captain
Jackson Sell (Mill Valley, Calif) scored two of his three goals in the quarter, with senior
Max Kim (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and junior
Will Schinabeck (Shaker Heights, Ohio) assisting.
York connected on two of their 12 total shots in the period with Wolf and Harnick finding the back of the net again.
York grew the lead to six as Jack Grayson and Ames Clark found the back of the net in the first 3:12 of the third quarter. Then the two teams went back-and-forth twice until Bates ended the quarter with back-to-back tallies, once again cutting the deficit to four, 11-7, heading into the fourth. York quickly extended their lead and out the game out of reach with five-straight goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to take a commanding 16-7 advantage. The Spartans controlled the fourth quarter, out-scoring the Bobcats, 8-1, winning the ground ball battle 17-4, and winning all 10 face-offs.
Wolf scored five goals to lead the Spartans while Sell recorded a hat trick for Bates.
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday at Middlebury, with the opening face-off set for 1pm.
