LEWISTON, Maine -- William Puccio scored four goals to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams past the Bates men's lacrosse team by a score of 13-6 Saturday morning at Garcelon Field.
In rainy conditions, the two teams stayed close for the first 15 minutes of action. Puccio and Ryan Werner scored the first two goals of the game for the Bantams (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) but the Bobcats (0-4, 0-2 NESCAC) responded.
Senior
Walter Braun (Charlotte, Vt.) got Bates on the board with 9:44 left in the first quarter on an unassisted tally. Then first-year
Denzel Evans (Baltimore, Md.) found senior captain
Jackson Sell (Mill Valley, Calif.) for the equalizer with 3:45 remaining in the first.
Jack Cahill answered less than a minute later for the Bantams, putting them up 3-2. They did not surrender the lead again, with Werner adding his second goal of the first quarter for Trinity with just 10 seconds left, making the score 4-2.
The Bobcats struck first in the second quarter when junior
Malcolm Klingbeil (Powell, Ohio) scored a man-up goal to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 14:30 remaining until halftime.
A Puccio goal with 10:41 left started a 3-0 run for Trinity that got broken up by sophomore
Jake Johnson (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) on an assist from sophomore
Wil Masterson (York, Maine) with 3:14 left in the second quarter.
Trailing 7-4, the Bobcats were still within striking distance after Johnson's goal. But the Bantams went on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach. Connor McCulloch scored a man-up goal with 2:38 left in the second and Puccio followed with another tally to make the score 9-4 at halftime.
Bates did not score any goals in the third quarter and Trinity scored three, including Puccio's fourth of the day.
Down 13-4, the Bobcats ended their scoring drought with 3:55 left in regulation when Masterson scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior captain
Jack Lousararian (Mansfield, Mass.) added a late goal as well, with senior
Oliver Allen (Portsmouth, N.H.) dishing out the assist.
Masterson led the way for Bates with a goal, two assists, and a pair of ground balls. Junior
Jackson Williams (Cumberland, Maine) won half his face-offs (11-22) and recorded a team-high five ground balls. He also caused a turnover.
Cooper Yaccino played well for the Bantams in goal, tallying 11 saves. Sophomore
Spencer Wood (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) tallied 10 saves for Bates.
Trinity out-shot Bates 47-36 on the day.
The Bobcats are back in action this Friday when they take on Amherst in a neutral site game in Owings Mills, Md. at 1:20pm.
