PHILADELPHIA -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team picked up wins at the No. 5 through 9 positions to defeat No. 23 Dickinson 5-4 on the last day of the Summers Cup at the College Squash Association National Championships.
The Bobcats (6-12) avenged their 5-4 loss to the Red Devils (6-16) from earlier in the season with a win on the big stage Sunday.
Three Bates players earned sweeps, with sophomore
Matthew Lazor (West Hartford, Conn.) continuing his excellent rookie campaign with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-9) win over Dickinson's Bradley Hennessy at the No. 9 position. Fellow sophomore
Garrett Wenberg (Rye, N.Y.) earned a sweep as well, taking down Benjamin Gemma 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-7) at the No. 8 position.
Moving a little up the ladder, junior
Jairaj Singh (Jaipur, India) took care of business at the No. 6 position, winning 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-6) over Aidan Ray.
Bates' two other wins both came in four games.
Junior
Jonathan Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) defeated Osuman Imoro 3-1 (11-2, 5-11, 11-4, 11-4) at the No. 5 position, the highest spot in the lineup Bates won at on the day. Meanwhile, junior
Sultan Hashmi (Belvedere, Calif.) won 3-1 (11-9, 11-3, 3-11, 11-7) over Dickinson's Samuel Knipp at the No. 7 position.
This marks the final team event of the year for the Bates men's squash team. Select Bobcats will return to Philadelphia March 4-6 for the CSA Individual National Championships.
