Middletown, Conn. - For the second consecutive day, Bates College salvaged a stalemate in dramatic fashion as the Bobcats, erasing a 3-0 halftime deficit, netted four second-half goals en route to a 4-4 tie at #17 Wesleyan University.
A trio of tallies at 2:47, 23:38, and 44:33 of the first frame provided a seemingly comfortable cushion for the home team. It proved to be a tale of two halves for both squads as the Bobcats bounced back in a big way with a four-goal flurry in the first 20:28 of the second stanza.
Tife Agunloye (Monroe, Conn.) provided two of the four scoring efforts for the garnet and white as the sophomore sent in his third and fourth goals of the year at 46:08 and 62:37, respectively.
Sebastian Iacovitti (Fy.-Florence, Italy) connected on his first collegiate goal at 57:44 to put the Bobcats to within one at 3-2.
Saturday's hero,
Rawson Welch (Denver, Colo.), once again demonstrated a flair for the dramatic as the junior, a day after his last-second goal locked up a 2-2 tie at #8 Hamilton, put Bates ahead temporarily, 4-3, with his tally in the 66th minute (65:28).
The Bobcats' advantage would hold for exactly 25 seconds as Wesleyan's Matthew Rubenstein (Sr.-Forest Hills, N.Y.) sent in the equalizer at 65:53.
Both net-minders did all they could to keep their respective teams in the match as both squads combined for 21 shots on frame.
Nico Hessel (Fy.-Brattleboro, Vt.) recorded three saves in 90:00 of action. Liam Devenny (Sr.-Concord, N.H.) collected five saves for the Cardinals (6-3-2, 3-2-2 NESCAC).
Bates (5-4-2, 1-4-2 NESCAC) takes the pitch again this Saturday with a Senior Day home contest vs. Tufts. The NESCAC clash begins at 2:30 p.m. at Russell Street Track & Field.
