Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team played at rival Colby Saturday to a 9-0 defeat that was far more competitive than the final score may appear.
The host Mules (4-1) emerged from the doubles round with a commanding 3-0 lead, though No. 3 doubles was decided by tiebreaker and first and second doubles were both decided by 8-6 scores.Â
Senior
Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) then came back to tie her match at No. 1 singles with Colby's Carly Levitz and push it to a third set before falling 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
Sweeney teamed with senior
Haley Washington (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) for the 8-6 loss at first doubles to Callie Nesbitt and Lindsey Hernandez.
Sophomore
Joanna Atwater (Short Hills, N.J.) played Nesbitt to a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles, and she teamed up with classmate
Alexandra D'Aquino (Weston, Conn.) in the 8-6 loss at second doubles.
Sophomores
Victoria Scott (Edgartown, Mass.) and
Laura Littlefield (Ellicott City, Md.) took Colby's Levitz and Callie McClain to the tiebreaker at third doubles. Sophomore
Abigail Zerbey (North Andover, Mass.) lost competitively at No. 6 singles to McClain.
The Bobcats (2-2) are expected to play one more match against a NESCAC opponent to be determined next weekend.
