Baseball team clouts three home runs in losses to Brandeis and Elmira

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Bates baseball team belted three home runs over two games, but came away with a pair of losses to Brandeis University (11-5) and Elmira College (6-4) on Tuesday at Chain of Lakes Stadium.

Bates (1-2) will face Brandeis (2-0) again Thursday at 11am at Chain of Lakes.

Recap: Brandeis 11, Bates 5

First-year third baseman Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) cracked a two-run home run in the seventh inning and junior Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.) hit a two-run single in the first inning, but it wasn't enough against the Judges, who rapped out 14 hits and scored in six of the nine innings.

Bates sophomore Ian Tolis (Madison, Conn.) gave up three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run by Luke Hall. Bates got two runs back in the bottom of the innings, as Avila drove in senior Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) and junior Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) with a two-out single.

Brandeis extended its lead with three runs in the third, including an RBI single by Mike Khoury and a two-run double by Victor Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer hit another RBI double in the fifth for a 7-2 lead, and the Judges added single runs in the sixth and seventh for a 9-2 lead.

Bates scored three runs in the seventh as Arend drew a two-out walk and Jamieson, batting in the third spot in Bates' lineup, drove him home with his first career home run.

First-year lefthander Matt Spind (Clarksville, Md.) made his first collegiate start and went five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks. Senior righthander Will Slayne (Dedham, Mass.) allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings of relief, and sophomore lefthander Braden Karess (Boxborough, Mass.) held the Judges scoreless over the final two innings in his first collegiate appearance.

Tim Lopez earned the victory for Brandeis, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks over five innings while striking out eight. Sam Nugent batted 5-for-5 at the top of the Judges' lineup.

Recap: Elmira 6, Bates 4

Sophomores Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) and Antonio Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) both hit solo homers as part of Bates' nine-hit attack, but the Pioneers (1-2) avenged their loss to the Bobcats the day before by making more use of their seven hits in the game.

The game was tied 1-1 before Elmira plated four runs on four hits in the third. Sam Plaugher and Jack Volpe both walked to lead off and stole bases in front of Mason Ryan's two-run single for a 3-1 Elmira lead. Tommy Fogarty followed with a one-out double to score Ryan, and he scored on a single by Jourdan Plaisted.

Ryan drove in Elmira's sixth run in the fourth inning, with a sacrifice fly to score Volpe.

Bates began chipping at the deficit with solo homers by Gotti and Jareno in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively.

Junior Colin Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) hit a two-out pinch single to score senior Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) in the top of the ninth, but Elmira closer Angus Adams struck out Jamieson to leave two runners stranded, including the would-be tying run.

Ryan drove in three runs for Elmira while Fogarty was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Tolis (0-1) was charged with five runs over three innings and the loss. Three relievers combined on the final five innings while allowing only one unearned run: senior Ryan Moralejo (Miami, Fla.), junior Peter Schuldt (Winnetka, Ill.) and senior Miles Michaud (Madison, Conn.).

Elmira starter Zach Williamson scattered seven hits and two walks over eight innings to earn the victory.
