Unbeaten Brandeis downs Bates baseball team

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Brandeis Judges continued to steamroll opponents on Thursday, defeating the Bates baseball team 15-1 in the RussMatt Invitational. The game was halted after seven innings due to a tournament 10-run rule.

After their third loss in a row, the Bobcats (1-3) will look to rebound in its final game of the tournament on Saturday, playing against Capital University of Columbus, Ohio, at 2:30pm at Chain of Lakes Stadium.

Brandeis (4-0) has outscored opponents by an aggregate score of 51-10.

The Judges' 13-hit attack was led by Mike Khoury and Isaac Fossas, who combined to go 6-for-8 with 10 RBIs. Khoury was 3-for-4 with six RBIs, including a grand slam in the Judges' five-run third inning. Fossas went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Bates scored its lone run via the first two batters in the game. Junior Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) led off with a double and scored on a single by junior Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.), who was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Going 1-for-1 at the plate in reserve roles were first-years Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) and Matt Connelly (Wellesley, Mass.). Also adding to Bates' six-hit total for the game were seniors Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) and Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.).

Brandeis starter Kyle Shedden allowed one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over five innings, and Donnie Weisse tossed two shutout innings of relief.

Sophomore lefthander Jared Pantalony (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave up seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 2.1 innings in taking the loss. But the Judges didn't relent against Bates' three relief pitchers, scoring six runs on eight hits and five walks combined against first-year righthander Sam Hough (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.), senior righthander Mark Russell (Westford, Mass.) and junior righthander Henri Pratt (Pebble Beach, Calif.).
