Donahue, Rex, Rust receive USTFCCCA All-Region honors

NEW ORLEANS -- Bates men's track and field athletes Brendan DonahueJohn Rex and Bart Rust all received NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field USTFCCCA All-Region honors this week from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Donahue was named All-New England in the decathlon, Rex in the hammer throw and Rust in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of top-3 ranked relay teams. New England contains the most institutions of any of the USTFCCCA's regions.

Donahue (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.), a junior team captain, ranks third in New England and 17th in Division III overall in the decathlon, based upon his career-best score of 6,458 points from Open New Englands on May 10. He is competing in the decathlon Thursday and Friday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio, making his NCAA Championship meet debut.

Rex (Andover, Mass.), a sophomore, ranks third in New England and 16th in the country in the hammer throw, with a top effort of 190 feet recorded at the UNH Wilcat Invitational on Apr. 13. Rex is competing in the hammer this weekend at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio, making his second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance after competing in the weight throw at indoor nationals in March.

Rust (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.), a first-year student, ranks fifth in the steeplechase in New England, with a top time of 9:21.11, which earned him second place at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships on May 2.
