No. 19 women's squash advances to Walker Cup final with 7-2 win over No. 18 Tufts

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team swept four matches on its way to a 7-2 victory over No. 18 Tufts Saturday in the Walker Cup semifinals. 

Bates (12-7) won every match at the No. 1 through 6 positions against the Jumbos (14-7) to defeat Tufts for the third time this season.

Playing at the No. 1 position for the second straight match, junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) rallied from two games down to defeat Julie Yeung 3-2 (4-11, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-8) in the lone five-game match of the day between the two teams. 

Sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) had no problem at the No. 2 position, sweeping the Jumbos' Claire Davidson 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-7) to improve her record to 14-5 on the year. Bates' pair of captains won both their matches, with junior Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) rallying from a game down to defeat Zarena Jafry 3-1 (11-13, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6) at the No. 3 position and sophomore Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) turning in the Bobcats' most dominant performance of the day in a 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-3) win over Catherine Shanahan at the No. 4 position. 

First-years Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) and Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y) won at the No. 5 and 6 positions respectively. O'Brien swept Hannah Burns 3-0 (14-12, 11-7, 11-7) while Manternach won 3-1 (11-7, 11-13, 11-2, 11-8) over Rachel Windreich. 

Junior Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) also picked up a win on Saturday with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-7) victory over Sahana Karthik at the No. 8 position.

The Bobcats have won four straight matches and six of their last seven overall. They take on No. 17 Dickinson College Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with the Walker Cup on the line.
