Manternach and Dunham get wins in No. 29 women's squash's 7-2 loss to No. 12 George Washington

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Katie Manternach and sophomore Eliza Dunham picked up victories but the No. 29 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team dropped three five-game matches in a 7-2 loss to No. 12 George Washington Sunday afternoon at the Bates College Squash Center.

Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) improved her record to 5-2 on the season with a 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-9) victory over George Washington's Emma Tryon at the No. 5 position. Meanwhile, Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) moved to 3-0 on the year with her third win in as many days. She defeated George Washington's Zuha Nazir 3-1 (11-8, 5-11, 11-9, 11-8) at the No. 6 position.

The Colonials (5-3) were able to edge the Bobcats (2-5) in three very tight matches, which ended up being the difference in the contest. Junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) won her first two games before George Washington's Mary Jo Mahfood rallied for a 3-2 (9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-6) victory at the No. 2 position.

Another five-game match occurred at the No. 4 position, where first-year Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) nearly pulled off a comeback win but ultimately fell 3-2 (12-10, 11-5, 7-11, 3-11, 11-4) to Abigail Shonrock. Junior Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) also battled hard at the No. 9 position before falling 3-2 (9-11, 14-12, 11-6, 10-12, 11-4) to the Colonials' Aarushi Lakhotia.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday when they visit No. 20 Wesleyan for a 6:00 p.m. match.
