LEWISTON, Maine -- Despite victories at the top three positions on the ladder, the number 29 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team fell 5-4 to No. 15 Middlebury Friday night at the Bates College Squash Center.
Sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) led the way again for Bates, winning 3-0 (11-3, 12-10, 11-2) over the Panthers' Beatrijs Kuijpers at the No. 1 position. Junior Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) impressed in her return to the lineup, stepping in to the No. 2 position and winning 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-8) over Lucy Bostwick.
The Bobcats' two captains also prevailed on Friday, with junior Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) taking down Alexa Comai 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-9) at the No. 3 position and sophomore Eliza Dunham (New Haven, Conn.) winning 3-0 (11-8, 12-10, 12-10) in her season debut over Middlebury's Virginia Schaus at the No. 6 position.
Unfortunately, Bates (2-3) dropped the other five matches to the Panthers (4-2), with first-year Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) putting up a strong fight in a 3-1 (11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10) loss at the No. 5 position to Middlebury's Natalie Madden. Junior Katie Bull (Sudbury, Mass.) won her first game at the No. 9 position before falling 3-1 (9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-2) to Lily Bogle.
The Bobcats look to bounce back Saturday when they host No. 14 nationally ranked Williams at noon.
