OSHKOSH, Wis. -- The Bates volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Friday, as Carthage defeated the Bobcats 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-6) before Wisconsin-Stevens Point outlasted Bates 3-2 (20-25, 30-28, 21-25, 25-21, 17-15).
Bates (10-10) concludes the tournament Saturday against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 10:30am Eastern, followed at 11:30 by a match against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Bobcats saw their streak of nine set wins in a row end in the first frame against Carthage (15-7), and played from behind the rest of the way.
First-year Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany) was a bright spot, however, putting down 11 kills on 17 attempts with no errors for a season-best attack percentage of .647. Sophomore libero Gabi Eustache (New York, N.Y.) popped up 25 digs in the three sets, and senior setter Jacqueline Forney (Bloomington, Ind.) totaled 27 assists and two kills.
Meghan Behrendt and Megan Fallert combined for 18 kills with no attack errors to lead the Reds, with Fallert submitting nine kills on only 12 attempts (.750). Ellie LeCount passed out 30 assists.
Bates regrouped for a better performance against the Pointers (22-7), coming back from a set down to grab a 2-1 lead. UWSP prevailed 25-21 in the fourth set to tie it at 2-2, and the Pointers outlasted the Bobcats 18-16 in the tiebreaking frame.
April Gehl amassed 27 kills on 71 attempts, dominating the Pointer offense. She also had 20 digs. Kelly Magliano added 12 kills and Abby Majercik posted 52 assists with 18 digs.
Sophomore Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) led the Bobcats in the match with 13 kills and added 10 digs in her eighth double-double of the season. First-year Ruby Lightbourn (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 12 kills. Forney had 41 assists, 12 digs and four blocks. Echipue had five blocks to go with six kills and Claire Naughton (Darien, Conn.) posted eight kills and four blocks.
