WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The number 17 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team made program history on Sunday by defeating No. 19 Williams 8-1.
The victory marks the first time in program history either the men or the women's squash team has won at Williams. The victory is the Bobcat men's (5-2) fourth straight over the Ephs (6-4).Â
Senior Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) returned to his hometown and emerged victorious, knocking off Andrew Litvin 3-2 (12-10, 12-10, 4-11, 10-12, 11-7) in a dramatic match at the No. 9 position.
The Bobcats and the Ephs engaged in three five-game matches, with Bates winning all of them. Senior Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) took down the Ephs' John Fitzgerald 3-2 (13-11,11-6, 6-11, 4-11, 12-10) at the No. 2 position. Junior Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) won at the No. 3 position in similar fashion, defeating William Means 3-2 (11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-13, 12-10), surviving a nailbiting fifth game to pull out the win.
Other wins were a bit less dramatic. Senior three-time All-America Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) swept Jamie Ruggiero 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-4) at the No. 1 position. Fellow Egyptian, first-year Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt), also swept his opponent, winning 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-6) over John Shuck at the No. 4 position.Â
First-year Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) picked up a 3-0 victory as well, taking down Will Ruggiero 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 at the No. 6 position.Â
Senior captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) and sophomore Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) both won their matches in four games. Burt defeated Carl Shuck 3-1 (11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-6) at the No. 5 position and Cannon emerged victorious 3-1 (5-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-7) over Mason Elizondo at the No. 7 position.
The Bobcats are back in action this Saturday when they host Hobart and Hamilton starting at noon at the Bates Squash Center. Prior to the Hobart match, the Bobcats will honor their six seniors as part of Senior Day.
