MEDFORD, Mass. -- Junior Nina Davenport scored a team-high 16 points and senior co-captain Allie Coppola tallied another double-double but the Bates women's basketball team fell 73-44 on the road to No. 1 nationally ranked Tufts University Saturday afternoon. 

Davenport's (Freeport, Maine) 16 points came on 6-16 shooting; she was 4-12 from three on the day. She also grabbed five rebounds and tallied three steals. 

Meanwhile Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) poured in 13 points on 5-13 shooting and recorded a game-high 15 rebounds for the Bobcats. 

Melissa Baptista led the Jumbos (20-0, 7-0 NESCAC) with a game-high 22 points and Michela North chipped in 10 points, becoming Tufts' all-time leading scorer in the process.

Bates (5-13, 2-5 NESCAC) took an early lead when junior Lyse Henshaw (Brunswick, Maine) made a layup to begin the game. After Baptista responded with a made three, Davenport hit a three of her own to put Bates up 5-3. Then Coppola made a layup to extend the advantage to 7-3 with 7:20 to go in the first quarter.

But at that point the Jumbos went on a 19-0 run, taking the lead for good. First-year Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) hit a three with 1:25 left to stop the bleeding but at that point Tufts led 22-10. 

Bates never got to within single digits the rest of the way as the top-ranked Jumbos showed by they haven't lost a NESCAC game since 2013.

The Bobcats trailed by 23 at halftime.

After getting outscored 23-9 in the third quarter, Bates finished the game strong by outscoring Tufts 13-5 in the fourth quarter of action.

The Bobcats scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter with Coppola making a layup, Davenport hitting a three and Coppola making a pair of free throws.

First-year Carly Christofi (Fairlawn, N.J) hit a three with 4:45 to go and Coppola converted an old fashioned three-point play 4:11 left for Bates' final points of the game.

The Jumbos shot 46% from the floor while Bates shot 30.8% from the field. The Bobcats committed 18 turnovers while Tufts only turned it over nine times.

Bates looks to bounce back Tuesday when they host Maine-Farmington at 7:30 p.m.
