LEWISTON, Maine -- Seniors
Ahmed Hatata,
Darrius Campbell,
Spencer Burt,
Carlos Ames and
Stefan Joseph were all victorious on their Senior Day on Saturday and the number 18 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 27 Hobart 9-0, following that up with a 9-0 win over No. 26 Hamilton.
Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt), a three-time All-American, played at the No. 1 position and dispatched Hobart's Josh Oakley 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-6) in the early match and beat Hamilton's Colin O'Dowd 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-7) in the afternoon to improve his record to 8-1 on the season.
Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.), a two-time All-NESCAC selection, played at the No. 2 position and took down Hobart's Felipe Pantle 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-5) and Hamilton's Callum Sondhi 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-7) as well.
Burt (Portland, Ore.), the Bobcats' captain, won both his matches playing at the No. 5 position, a 3-0 (14-12, 11-5, 11-3) win over Hobart's Ahmed Kiwan and a 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-3) win over Hamilton's Sam Matlick.
Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) played at the No. 9 position against Hobart, defeating Matthew Frantz 3-1 (11-7, 11-6, 12-14, 11-8). He moved up to the No. 8 position against Hamilton and defeated Atticus Jones 3-1 (11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4) as well.
Joseph (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) slid into the No. 9 position against Hamilton and dispatched Jonathan Ruth 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-2).
Junior Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) introduced the Bobcats' six seniors before the match and proceeded to have quite the dramatic match of his own at the No. 3 position against Hobart. Trailing 9-5 in the fourth game, trailing two games to one, Nambiar scored six unanswered points to force a fifth game. In the fifth game, he bounced back from an ankle injury suffered during play to hold on and beat Jack Shannon 12-10, taking the match 3-0 (9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10). He then proceeded to beat Hamilton's Tucker Hamlin 3-1 (11-9, 11-3, 6-11, 11-6) at the number three position in his afternoon match.
Bates (7-2) got strong performances from their younger players as well.
First-year Mahmoud Yousry (Cairo, Egypt) swept both his matches at the No. 4 position. Sophomore Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) won the only match he playd, 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 1--5) over Hobart's Divine Wing at the No. 6 position.
First-year Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) swept his Hobart opponent at the No. 7 position and moved up to the No. 6 position against Hamilton, winning his match against the Continentals' Nicholas Conzelman 3-0 (11-2, 11-3, 11-3).
Sophomore McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) won both his matches in three games, playing at the No. 8 position against Hobart and at the No. 7 position against Hamilton.
