No. 19 Huskies come from behind to defeat baseball 10-7

GORHAM, Maine -- Paul McDonough drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning as the University of Southern Maine came from behind to defeat visiting Bates College 10-7 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.

The win was the fifth straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 27-11.  The Bobcats fell to 12-20 overall despite collecting 15 hits, their most since March 29 at Endicott.

In the eighth inning, Bates grabbed a 7-6 lead on a two-run, two-out double down the left field line by sophomore Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) off USM rookie reliever Jake Dexter.

The Huskies loaded the bases in their half of the frame on a single and two hit batsmen to set the stage for McDonough, who lashed a drive into the left-center field gap to clear the bases.  McDonough moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brandon Martins.

Bates sent 11 men to the plate in the third inning to plate five runs to take a 5-1 lead. The first seven batters reached base via six singles and a walk.  Junior Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) brought home the first two runs with a single. Sophomore Jake Shapiro (Sandy, Utah) and first-year Daniel Trulli (Melrose, Mass.) had back-to-back RBI singles, and senior Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded to force home the fifth run.

USM pecked away at the Bates lead with an unearned run in the third, and two runs in the fourth to get back within one. Sam Dexter drove in the third-inning run with a sacrifice fly. Cam Hauze had an RBI single, and Jake Dexter an RBI double in the fourth.

Sam Dexter tied the game in the sixth with another sacrifice fly to bring home Nick DiBiase, who reached on a three-base outfield error.

Southern Maine took a 6-5 lead in the seventh on Hauze's two-out single to score McDonough, who led off the inning with a double.

McDonough finished with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Hauze had two singles and two RBIs. DiBiase reached base five times on three walks, the outfield error and a single, and scored four times. Jake Dexter picked up his fifth win of the season going 1 1/3 innings.  Ryan Browner (Georgetown, Mass.) had an outstanding long relief stint going five innings. Browner gave up one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two.

Canavan and Fox led the Bobcats' 15-hit attack with three hits and two RBIs apiece. Shapiro, senior Berto Diaz (Carson, Calif.) and first-year Joe Dinoto (West Friendship, Md.) each had two singles.  Senior Chris Ward (Pasadena, Calif.), the last of seven Bates hurlers used in the game, was tagged with the loss.

Bates travels to Bowdoin for a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. -- the NESCAC rivals recently added this non-conference contest to the schedule.
