HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 17 Bates men's squash team advanced to the NESCAC Final for the first time in program history thanks to wins over No. 20 Wesleyan and No. 14 Middlebury Saturday in the NESCAC Championships.
Bates defeated Wesleyan 9-0 in the quarterfinals and they knocked off Middlebury 6-3 in the semifinals. Â
The Bobcats advance to face defending team national champion and No. 1 nationally ranked Trinity in the final Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Bates got off to a strong start in their morning match with the Cardinals. Anirudh Nambiar '18 (Bangalore, India) provided the most dramatic victory when he came roaring back from a 2-0 deficit at the No. 5 position to beat David Sneed 3-2 (8-11, 1-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9).
Senior co-captain Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) continued his excellent play as of late with a 3-1 (11-8, 4-11, 13-11, 12-10) win over Alex Kamisher at the No. 4 position. First-year Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) also picked up a four-set win, an 11-9, 4-11, 11-4, 11-7 victory over Zach Roach at the No. 6 position.
The rest of the Bobcats had no time for drama as they swept their opponents. Bates' top three lived up to their pedigree. Defending national champion Ahmed Abdel Khalek '16 (Cairo, Egypt) won his 56th consecutive match, defeating Guy Davidson 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-6). Two-time All-American Ahmed Hatata '17 (Alexandria, Egypt) knocked off Raheem Logan 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-2) and Darrius Campbell '17 (St. Stephen, S.C.) swept Chris Hart 3-0 (11-9, 12-10, 11-6).
The Bobcats showed off their depth with their No. 7-9 players also sweeping their Wesleyan opponents. At the No. 7 position, Carlos Ames '17 (Williamstown, Mass.) dispatched Grant Loundsbury 3-0 (15-13, 11-8, 11-9). Junior co-captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) took care of Yahya Ladiwala 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-8) and first-year McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) defeated Jason Brandner 3-0 (11-9, 11-2, 11-6).Â
Against Middlebury, Bates got the victory they'd been seeking ever since they lost 5-4 to the Panthers back on January 8.
Coley Cannon got the Bobcats off on the right foot with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-8) win at the No. 6 position over Henry Pearson. Cannon avenged a 3-0 loss he suffered to Pearson the last time these two teams met up. Â
Hatata followed with an easy 3-0 (11-3, 13-11, 11-3) win over David Cromwell to put Bates up 2-0. Abdel Khalek won his 57th consecutive match, an easy 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-2) win over Andrew Jung.
The No. 4-7 positions supported the two Ahmeds and provided the difference in the match.Â
In addition to Cannon: Arora, Nambiar and Ames emerged victorious.
The first time these teams met, Nambiar played at the four and lost while Arora played at the five and lost. This time they switched positions and emerged victorious. Arora took down Andrew Cadienhead 3-1 (11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 14-12) at the No. 4 position and Nambiar swept Harrison Croll 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 12-10) at the No. 5 position.
Nambiar's 12-10 win in the third set was the fifth win of the match for the Bobcats, clinching a spot in the final.
Ames also won, defeating Ben Krant in four sets 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 2-11, 12-10) at the No. 7 position.Â
Bates swept four of the six matches they won against the Panthers.Â
