WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Bates women's tennis team got their spring season started on the right foot with a 6-3 victory over Whittier College on Tuesday.

Bates (1-1) took two of the three doubles matches from the Poets (0-2). 

Elizabeth Erbafina '17 (Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Meagan Zamilpa and Gabi Etchegaray by a count of 8-6. 

Meanwhile, "the two Emmas", Emma Mattson '16 (Dana Point, Calif.) and Emma Blakeley '16 (Hope, Maine) had no problem at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Ruthie Kaplan and Geetha Amarasinghe.

Erbafina and Stone also came up big in singles play for the Bobcats. Erbafina prevailed at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1 over Etchegaray. Meanwhile Stone took down Jada Henry at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-3. 

Bates showed off their depth with straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Blakeley knocked off Kaplan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 and Olivia Voccola '17 (Falmouth, Maine) handled Amarasinghe 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.    

The Bates women's tennis team is back in action Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with all the action starting at 5:00 p.m. eastern time.
