MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team continued their strong start to the season with an 8-1 victory over No. 27 Dickinson Sunday morning to finish undefeated at the Wesleyan Round Robin Tournament.
Bates (4-1) is off to their best start since 2013-14 when they started the season 8-1.Â
Senior three-time All-American Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) defeated fellow Egyptian Abdelrahman Elsergany 3-0 (11-5, 11-1, 11-9) on Sunday at the No. 1 position. Seniors Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) and Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) won at the No. 2 and 3 positions respectively, with Campbell's opponent retiring after two games and Burt prevailing 3-1 (7-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-8) over Alexander Wattles.Â
First-years Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) and Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) moved up the ladder and won at the No. 4 and 5 positions. Bonnell swept Andrew Strudwick 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-3) and Rothenberg had no trouble with Zach Najera, winning 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-7) as well.
The sophomore duo of Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) and McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) showed off the Bobcats' depth with wins at the No. 6 and 8 positions. Cannon swept Harrison Mayo 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-2) and Abbott took down Vincent Warzecha 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-6).
Senior Stefan Joseph (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) continues to shine when given a chance, playing at the No. 9 position on Sunday and winning 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-6) over Nicholas Struzenski. Â
The Bobcats get more than a month off before returning to the squash courts on Saturday, January 7 when they visit No. 15 nationally ranked Middlebury for a crucial match against one of their biggest NESCAC rivals.Â
