MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team swept six of nine matches on their way to an 8-1 victory over No. 20 Wesleyan Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Wesleyan Round Robin Tournament.
Bates (3-1) won their third consecutive match over a NESCAC opponent behind strong play up and down their lineup.
Senior Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) took on Chris Hart at the No. 1 position and emerged victorious by a count of 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-7). Fellow seniors Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) and Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) also picked up wins. Burt bounced back from a tough first game to beat Grant Lounsbury 3-1 (7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-2) at the No. 4 position and Ames had no difficulty with Alex Dreyfus, winning 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-5) at the No. 8 position.
Junior Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) played a close contest with Zach Roach at the No. 3 position in his second match of the season. Nambiar ended up winning 3-0 (12-10, 11-8, 14-12) to improve his record this season to 2-0.
The success of sophomores Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) and McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) continued as well, with both winning in sweeps. Cannon defeated Josh Lane 3-0 (11-2, 11-7, 11-6) at the No. 7 position and Abbott knocked off Kevin Le 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-5) at the No. 9 position.
First-years Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) and Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each earned wins to help push Bates over the top. Bonnell beat Yahya Ladiwala 3-1 (11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5) at the No. 5 position and Rothenberg won 3-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-3) over William Bienstock at the No. 6 position.
Bates remains on the Wesleyan campus to take on No. 27 nationally ranked Dickinson Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
