Men's squash tops Bowdoin 9-0 in home opener

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team achieved victory in style in their home opener with a 9-0 win over No. 26 nationally ranked Bowdoin Friday night at the Bates Squash Center.

The victory marks the 26th consecutive time the Bobcats (2-1) have beaten the Polar Bears (0-3) in men's squash.

Bates swept seven matches and won one by default on Friday.

Senior Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) had no problem at the No. 1 position, defeating James Paolella 3-0 (11-4, 11-1, 11-2) on the showcase court at the squash center. Senior Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) also swept his opponent, knocking off Satya Butler 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-3) at the No. 2 position.  

Meanwhile, senior captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) made his fellow upperclassmen proud with 3-0 (11-3, 13-11, 11-8) win over Benjamin Bristol at the No. 4 position, as did senior Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.), who won 3-0 (11-0, 11-2, 11-0) over Sam Halpert at the No. 8 position.

Junior Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) won his season debut with a 3-1 (11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6) win over Sebastian Kim on the showcase court at the No. 3 position. 

Among the underclassmen, first-years Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) and Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each won 3-0 at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively, with Bonnell winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-2 and Rothenberg prevailing 11-2, 11-3, 11-2.

Sophomore Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) dominated his opponent, winning 3-0 (11-0, 11-0, 11-1) at the No. 7 position. Meanwhile due to injury Bowdoin could not field a player at the No. 9 position, with sophomore McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) winning by default.

The Bobcats head to Wesleyan on Saturday, looking to pick up their third consecutive victory over a NESCAC opponent.
