HARTFORD, Conn. -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team evened their record on the young season with a 9-0 victory over No. 29 Connecticut College Sunday afternoon at Trinity College.
The Bobcats (1-1) swept all but one of the matches in the victory. In his first season playing exclusively at the No. 1 position, senior three-time All-American Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) picked up his first win of the year with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-2, 11-1) victory over Michael Rodriguez.
Fellow senior Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) notched a 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-8) win over Matthew Lillie at the No. 2 position.
Other notable wins on Sunday for Bates include the first collegiate victories for first-years Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.). Rothenberg defeated Daniel Reisman 3-0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-4) at the No. 3 position and Bonnell knocked off Samuel Piller (11-9, 11-5, 11-7) at the No. 5 position.
Senior captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) won 3-0 (11-9, 11-3, 11-6) at the No. 4 position over John Dunham and fellow seniors Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) and Stefan Joseph (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) emerged victorious as well at the No. 7 and No. 9 positions respectively.
Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) and McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) represented the sophomore class with wins at the No. 6 and No. 8 positions.
The Bobcats' home opener is set for Friday, December 2 at 6:00 p.m. when they welcome No. 24 nationally ranked Bowdoin to the Bates College Squash Center. Bates men's squash has beaten Bowdoin in 25 consecutive matches.
