No. 18 Connecticut College thwarts women's soccer 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Emmy McGoldrick's goal in the final second of the first half stood up as the game-winner as Connecticut College defeated the Bates College women's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday.

The goal was the first this season for the sophomore and the second in her career. It came soon after her corner kick late in the period. Bates first-year back Adena Bernot (Old Westbury, N.Y.) sent the ball out of bounds with about 15 seconds left, giving the Camels a throw-in by Livi Block. The ball returned to Block and her outside blast in the final seconds was deflected by Bates to McGoldrick, who quickly turned and sent a low shot inside the far post for the lead with 0.7 seconds showing on the game clock.

The Camels (8-1, 4-1 NESCAC) outshot the Bobcats (2-8-1, 0-7-1 NESCAC) by a 19-6 margin and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Conn College dominated the opening half with a 12-1 difference in shots, three of which were saved by Bates junior goalkeeper Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).

Bates evened things out in the second half, taking five shots to Conn College's six. McCarthy finished with five saves; Camels keeper Bryanna Montalvo made one save, on senior Hannah Graves' (Weston, Mass.) shot in the 52nd minute of the contest, to earn her third shutout of the season.

Bates plays a non-conference game Sunday 1pm at Husson University, looking to end a four-game losing streak. Conn College next hosts Brooklyn College Monday at 3pm.
