LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 18 Bates women's squash team lost a tight 5-4 decision to Virginia on Saturday but overwhelmed No. 28 Connecticut College by a final score of 9-0 at the Bates Squash Center.
The Bobcats (5-9) once again put up strong performances at the top two positions against the Cavaliers. First-years Kristyna Alexova (Boskovice, Czech Republic) and Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) won at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions respectively. Alexova swept her opponent 11-0, 11-8, 11-3 while Arjoon won in four sets 13-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-7.Â
Junior co-captains Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.) and Charlotte Cabot (Dover, Mass.) recorded victories at the No. 4 and 6 positions. Dunn won 3-1 (10-12, 11-7, 11-2, 11-8) and Cabot swept her opponent 11-7, 11-6, 11-6.Â
The only five-set match of the morning contest with the Cavaliers ended up swinging the final score Virginia's way. Senior co-captain Lauren Williams (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) went up 2-0 on Bella Jones at the No. 5 position. But Jones rallied to win the third set 15-13 and the fourth set 14-12. In the deciding fifth set, Jones was able to win 11-4 to take the match 3-2.Â
Five of the nine matches went longer than three sets in the very even match-up between the Bobcats and the Cavaliers.Â
Against the No. 28 Camels, Cabot got things off on the right foot with an easy 3-0 sweep of Caroline Lippincott (11-4, 11-0, 11-4) at the No. 6 position. Playing at the No. 9 spot, Cata Robert '18 (Greenwich, Conn.) swept Jacqueline Chu 11-7, 11-8, 17-15.Â
Katie Bull '19 (Sudbury, Mass.) picked up a four-set win at the No. 3 position while Williams bounced back to sweep Allie Fuller at the No. 5 spot (11-3, 11-4, 11-6) in her final home match of her career.Â
Alexova and Arjoon swept their opponents with Arjoon picking up the match-clinching victory. Six of the nine matches resulted in sweeps for the Bobcats against the Camels.
Bates heads to the NESCAC tournament next weekend on the campus of Trinity College.Â
