LEWISTON, Maine -- The three Bates seniors went a combined 5-0 in their final matches at the Bates Squash Center on Saturday and the No. 17 men's squash team defeated Virginia 8-1 and No. 29 Connecticut College 9-0 to go into the NESCAC tournament with some serious momentum.
Senior co-captain Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) got the day off on the right foot at the No. 3 position for the Bobcats (9-6). He defeated Charles Woodworth in straight sets 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.
Bates also won at the top two positions against the Cavaliers. Defending national champion Ahmed Abdel Khalek '16 (Cairo, Egypt) won his 54th consecutive match, defeating Mason Blake 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-5). Two-time All-American Ahmed Hatata '17 (Alexandria, Egypt) also took care of his opponent in straight sets, 11-9, 11-4, 11-2.
Bates won at the No. 7-9 positions, with first-year McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) clinching the victory with a 3-1 (11-9, 3-11, 11-6, 11-8) victory over James Dudzik at the No. 8 position.
The most dramatic win of the morning match with the Cavaliers belonged to Anirudh Nambiar '18 (Bangalore, India). He fell behind 2-0 but rallied to defeat Grayson Bubrosky 3-2 (10-12, 3-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-6).
Against the No. 29 Camels, Arora continued his excellent Senior Day by sweeping Matthew Lillie 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 at the No. 3 position. Creighton Foulkes '17 (Belmont, Mass.) knocked off Clay Lenahan 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-7) at the No. 9 position.
Abbott won again as well at the No. 6 position, an 11-4, 11-3, 11-5 sweep of Santiago Moran.
Hatata had no problem dispatching Daniel Reisman at the No. 2 position 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-1) and Abdel Khalek won his final home match of his career, and his 55th straight overall, in convincing fashion at the No. 1 position 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-1).
On Senior Day, senior co-captain Filip Michalsky (Prague, Czech Republic) earned the fifth and clinching win for the Bobcats, an 11-5, 11-7, 11-2 sweep of Louis Feingold at the No. 8 position.
Bates heads to the NESCAC tournament next weekend on the campus of Trinity College.
