CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Bates women's squash concluded team play on Saturday at CSA Team Nationals, falling 7-2 to Middlebury in the consolation semifinals of Kurtz Cup (B Division) play.
The Bobcats (10-12) were to face Franklin & Marshall, the loser of the other Kurtz consolation semifinal (8-1 against Drexel), on Sunday at MIT to determine 15th place in the College Squash Association's final rankings; that match has been cancelled due to a winter storm anticipated in the area.
Bates seniors
Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia) and
Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) won at the top two positions on the ladder for the second day in a row. Ariffin swept Saskia Pownall-Gray 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-4) for the third time this season. Kelly avenged her 3-2 defeat to Middlebury's Anne Wymard in last weekend's third-place match of the NESCAC Championships with a 3-1 (11-3, 11-13, 12-10, 11-8) triumph over Wymard on Saturday.
Middlebury (16-7), ranked 13th in the country to Bates' 16th, claimed every point from the third through the ninth positions, surrendering only three games on the way. Senior
Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.) fell 3-2 (11-13, 11-4, 11-13, 11-5, 11-8) to Middlebury's Liddy Renner at No. 5, while sophomore
Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.) was defeated 3-1 (11-13, 14-12, 11-4, 12-10) by Tiffany Hau in a tight match at No. 4.
Bates' season concludes with CSA Individual Nationals, to be held Feb. 27 through March 1 at Princeton.
