LEWISTON, Maine -- Drew Munoz scored his first collegiate goal in the 77th minute to break a scoreless draw, delivering a 1-0 victory to the Bates College men's soccer team over Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday night at Garcelon Field.

The Bobcats (6-2-1) notched their sixth victory of the season, the first time they have met that mark since 2008. The Mariners dipped to 3-7-1 on the season.

Bates controlled the game from start to finish, outshooting Maine Maritime by a 23-6 margin, including a 10-0 difference in shots on goal. But the Bobcats couldn't take the lead until 13:10 remained in regulation.

Sophomore forward Nate Merchant (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned the assist, his second of the season, carrying the ball toward the right goal-line before threading a cross through the penalty area, which found its way to Munoz on the left corner of the box. From 20 yards out, the first-year defender powered the ball on one touch into the middle of the goal, just under the crossbar.

The goal came three minutes after Bates' previous best scoring opportunity, when sophomore Justin Yacovino's (North Bergen, N.J.) shot from the top of the box rang off the crossbar. That opportunity followed a pair of close calls from off the foot of senior Luis Pereira (Curitiba, Brazil), both of which buzzed just wide of the goal.

Maine Maritime goalkeeper Marshall Spear had nine saves in back of a stout defense that kept the Mariners in the game. Bates goalie Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.) did not register a save but notched his third shutout of the season.

Bates next plays at NESCAC rival Connecticut College on Saturday at 2pm. Maine Maritime hosts NAC foe Husson on Saturday at 3:30pm.
