Knoth scores as men's soccer falls to Bowdoin in double overtime

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Sophomore Peabo Knoth scored an equalizer in the 53rd minute, but Bates College men's soccer fell to Bowdoin College in double overtime, 2-1, at Pickard Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Eric Goitia (Yorba Linda, Calif.) tallied the game-winner for the Polar Bears (2-2-0, 1-2-0 NESCAC) in the 108th minute after the Bobcats (0-4-1, 0-3-0 NESCAC) had kept the hosts off the scoreboard for close to 100 minutes after allowing a goal in the 13th minute.

Knoth (Portland, Maine) recorded the Bobcats' first goal of the season just over seven minutes into the second half as he took down a long ball from senior Sean Moyo (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) just inside the penalty area and chipped the ball over the keeper.

With under three minutes to play in the second overtime, Bowdoin junior Hunter Miller (Aurora, Ill.) played a corner kick to senior Daniel Melong (Winnipeg, Man.) who then sent a ball arcing toward the end line. Polar Bear junior Connor Keefe (San Diego, Calif.) headed the ball back into the goal area where classmate Ben Citrin (Chevy Chase, Md.) laid the ball off for Goitia who sent it into the back of the net.

Keefe notched Bowdoin's first goal of the game just over 12 minutes into the contest as junior Andrew Jones (Scarborough, Maine) worked along the left side of the box and sent a pass to Keefe who slotted a shot into the net from eight yards.

Both teams gained opportunities to score in the extra sessions. In the first overtime, a shot from Bates sophomore Luke McNabb (Glastonbury, Conn.) went high and a Bobcat corner in the 100th minute threatened while the Polar Bears sent a cross into the penalty area in the 99th minute which the Bobcats dealt with.

In the fourth and final period, a free kick from Moyo in the 106th minute took a punch to clear away while Jones sent a shot from 12 yards high of the mark in the 103rd minute after a cross came to him.

Bowdoin sophomore goalkeeper Noah Safian (Woodbridge, Conn.) made four saves in the win while Bates junior goalie Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.) stopped four shots in the loss.

Next, Bates hosts Wesleyan University on Saturday at 2 p.m. while Bowdoin plays at Middlebury College on Saturday at noon.
