LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Peabo Knoth netted the game-winning goal 5:20 into overtime, completing a 2-1 comeback victory for the Bates College men's soccer team over Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon.
Knoth (Portland, Maine) sealed Bates' first home conference win since 2008 when he received the ball from first-year Sal Sprofera (Medfield, Mass.), carried the ball from the right to the left side of the box and shot into the lower left corner of the Camels goal, for his team-best fifth score of the season.
The evenly matched teams tied in shot attempts (16-16) and both teams' goalkeepers collected six saves. Connecticut College took three more corner kicks in the game, 5-2.
The visiting Camels (5-4, 2-3 NESCAC) went on top in the game's 12th minute, when Colin Patch sent a direct kick into the upper right corner of the goal, past Bates junior keeper Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.).
Camels substitute Charlie Overton threatened with 2:30 left in the half, forcing Polito to knock the ball away and giving the Camels a corner kick. but with 1:30 left in the half, Bates tied the game up as first-year Nate Merchant (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a shot blocked but first-year Justin Yacovino (North Bergen, N.J.) collected the ball and scored on the final shot of the half, finding the bottom left corner.
The second half went scoreless, with Bates outshooting Connecticut College 9-7. With just 5 seconds remaining in regulation, Polito saved a shot by the Camels' Matthew Bitchell.
Connecticut College's Kevin O'Brien took the first shot of overtime with 5:20 left in the period, striking the post. Forty seconds later, Knoth netted the game-winner.
Bates is off until Monday, Oct. 13, when the Bobcats host Curry in a non-conference game.
