LEWISTON, Maine -- Fourth-ranked Amherst remained unbeaten over its past 28 games after a 3-1 win over the Bates men's soccer team on Sunday. Three Lord Jeffs scored on the day, led off by goalkeeper Thomas Bull.

The Lord Jeffs outshot the Bobcats by a 21-4 margin in raising their overall record to 7-0-1 and their NESCAC mark to 5-0-1.

Bates (1-3-2, 0-3-2 NESCAC) made it a one-goal game in the 65th minute with a nifty tally by first-year standout Peabo Knoth, who got a pass down the left wing from Aaron Nickelsberg, beat his defender one-on-one, carried into the left side of the box and drilled a low shot past Bull. Knoth's tally was only the fifth scored against the Lord Jeffs since the start of the 2012 season.

After a shot by Ben Norton glanced off the post, Amherst regained its two-goal edge eight minutes after Knoth's tally. Bates sophomore goalie Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, N.C.) turned away Christopher Martin's close-range shot after a strong baseline drive by Martin, but the ball caromed over to an open Andrew Orozco, who had no trouble putting away the easy scoring opportunity.

Bull broke a scoreless tie in the 16th minute after Amherst rushed the top of the penalty area leading up to the goalie's free kick from midfield. Maffly-Kipp was drawn out on the kick, which carried over everyone and tucked under the crossbar for a rare keeper's goal.

Amherst made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, when Elliot Cassutt took a throw-in from Bubba Van Wie, turned and found shooting space from the left corner of Bates' penalty area.

Maffly-Kipp made seven saves for Bates, and Bull totaled one stop. Sophomore Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J.) manned Bates' goal for the final nine minutes of the contest.

Bates resumes its schedule at Connecticut College on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2pm.
