Humes scores in women's soccer's loss to Trinity

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore Leah Humes scored an equalizing goal in the 58th minute for Bates College women's soccer, but Trinity College netted the game's final goal in the 66th minute to earn a 2-1 win at the Russell St. Field on Saturday.

Humes (Beaconsfield, Canada) scored her first career goal for the Bobcats (2-4-1, 1-3-1 NESCAC) off a chaotic scene in front of the net. However, less than 10 minutes later Kendra Lena put the Bantams (6-0-0, 4-0-0) back on top with a shot to the top left corner of the net.

Karyn Barrett scored the game's first tally at the 17:34 mark as Elisa Dolan played a ball into her in the box, and once Barrett controlled it, she slotted it past the goalkeeper.

Both teams put 11 shots on goal with Trinity holding a slight advantage in shots on goal (6-4). Senior Kara Stefaniak (Needham, Mass.) paced the hosts with three shots while first-year Jessica Vocaturo (Columbus, N.J.) followed closely with two. For the visitors, Abbey Lake posted three shots (two on goal), and Dolan had two shots.

Bates senior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) made four saves in the loss while Trinity's Monica Difiori stopped three shots in the win to improve to 6-0-0 on the season.

After falling behind 1-1, the Bobcats managed to take two shots with Vocaturo placing one on frame and also earned a corner kick. The Bantams nearly added a third goal in the 84th minute when an Andi Nicholson shot from 10 yards away off a cross just missed the top right corner.

Next, Bates hosts No. 19 Amherst tomorrow at noon while Trinity plays at Tufts tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
