Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bates College women's soccer could not overcome a first-half score and two second-half goals as No. 10 Brandeis University beat Bates 3-0 at Gordon Field on Sunday afternoon.

For the Bobcats (2-2-0), senior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) made a career-high 12 saves in the loss while junior Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped five shots in the shutout for the host Judges (5-0-0).

Sophomore Lily Peterson (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year Jessica Vocaturo (Columbus, N.J.) led the visitors with two shots on goal apiece while senior Kara Stefaniak (Needham, Mass.) also put a shot on target. Junior Dakota Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.) hit the crossbar in the 89th minute.

Schmelz saw some early action as Brandeis took five shots – two on goal – in the first 16 minutes forcing the Bobcat netminder to make two saves. Vocaturo placed the first shot on goal of the game for the Bobcats as she tested Savuto at the 17:06 mark. Schmelz stopped a header from going in the net in the 24th minute and stopped another shot just before the halftime whistle.

Exactly 35 minutes into the match, the Judges struck first as first-year Cidney Moscovitch (Coral Springs, Fla.) scored her third goal of the season. Moscovitch took a through ball from sophomore Melissa Darling (Weymouth, Mass.) and chipped the ball over Schmelz.

The Judges tallied their first goal of the second half as junior Sapir Edalati (Great Neck, N.Y.) capitalized on a rebound off a shot from junior Dara Spital (Miami, Fla.) in the 54th minute. Less than three minutes later, Brandeis struck again as senior Mary Shimko (Bay Village, Ohio) put a ball in the back of the net off a pass from junior Emma Eddy (Hinesburg, Vt.).

Schmelz posted three saves in the first eight minutes of the second half prior to the Judges breaking through. Peterson put two shots on frame within an eight-minute span later in the second half with the second shot on goal coming on a header off a corner kick.

Next, Bates returns to NESCAC action when it takes on Bowdoin on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
